          JOHANN AND HELENA FEHR FAMILY

     Johann Fehr was born on February 29, 1872, the son of Heinrich S. and Sara Fehr. He came to Canada with his parents, grandparents and other family members when he was four years of age.
     He became a skillful carpenter and blacksmith as well as a farmer. He also had a fair knowledge of steam engine mechanics.
     On February 21, 1905, he married Helena Olfert at Morden, Manitoba and in 1906, he came west to where his parents farmed.
     He obtained a homestead entry on SW of 2-14-14-W3 on May 4, 1906. He built a sod house and moved into it with his wife and two children on August 15, 1906. They continued to live in this sod house for several years, their daughter Sara (Mrs. Isaac Heinrichs) was born in it on August 19, 1909.
     Mr. J. Fehr spent his first years in Swift Current doing carpentry since he had broken only eight acres, but grew no crop. In 1907 he broke an additional 12 acres and cropped eight acres. By 1909 he had 75 acres in crop. His wife helped him with breaking this acreage, ploughing with a team of oxen, while her two young children stumbled along in the freshly ploughed furrow.
     In 1909 he valued his buildings: house - 14 x 18 at $250.00, stable - 18 x 30 at $100.00.
     In 1910 he purchased SE of 2-14-14-W3 of which 20 acres were already broken. Later he broke another 40 acres. This particular quarter had been applied for by a certain Jacob Harder on November 3, 1908.
     Mr. Fehr's farming operations continued to prosper until they were farming nine quarters. The farm work was done by all members of the family and hired help.
     In 1927 he bought his first tractor, a new Wallis and also a Sawyer Massey threshing machine.
     Mrs. J. Heinrichs (Sara Fehr) started ploughing when but a child of about seven. Once as a girl of about 13 or 14, she was offered $10.00 if she would help with the fall ploughing until freeze up. She accepted the offer and after putting in one day's ploughing. Ol' Man Winter relieved her. It turned cold quite suddenly and began snowing. She got her $10.00 nonetheless.
     Mrs. I. Heinrichs recalls going home from Swift Current with her father one day in early spring. The day had begun with fine weather, but some time after leaving the city in the afternoon a fierce prairie blizzard came upon them. Her father bundled her up in woolen quilts and laid her on the thick layer of straw in the sleigh. darkness set in and the blizzard continued to rage. The horses stumbled along through the snow for what seemed like hours and always father searched the dark night for the lights of home. His one great concern was that the horses might tire out and that they would have to spend the night out in the open. He continued to search the night in desperation for some landmark, some light; finally his eyes caught the faint glimmer of a farm light. His fears were dispelled and the hope of safety and possible comfort were realized. The lights had not been those of his own house, but those of an obliging neighbour's. The horses were taken care of and the weary travelers welcomed to a neighbour's best. next morning the weather was beautiful and father and child made for home straight away. Their arrival was greeted by an anxious mother who felt greatly relieved and tried to take everybody’s mind off their harrowing ordeal by drawing the father's attention to the snow melting on the roof.
     Helena Fehr was born to Peter and Helena Olfert (nee Kehler) on December 6, 1885, in the village of Edenburg in the R.M. of Douglas (which joined the R.M. of Rhineland in 1890) about three miles east of Gretna, Manitoba.
     Her brothers and sisters were: Jacob, Peter, Isaac, Helen, Justina, Abraham and Heinrich.
     Because her parents were extremely poor, Helena went to work when she was about 14 years of age. Such an unfortunate childhood left an indelible impression on her, all her adult life she strove to provide for her family and others in need.
     She was a courageous woman, facing and overcoming all hardships in the spirit of a true pioneer. She was a mother of nine children, discharging all of the duties of a housewife and also bravely shouldering the duties of a man - breaking land, planting and harvesting, always on call as a midwife or as a vet in a large part of this new land.
     I remember her telling me how she drew water from the well for their stock and also having to water an extra horse when a mountie would come by on horseback. "They were always riding by" she said.
     Mrs. Fehr would often have to assume full command of all farm operations while her husband was out building houses, barns, etc., for the new immigrants. Her duties sometimes included such unusual jobs as helping to break horses.
     She had no formal schooling, but somehow she found time to learn not only her mother tongue (low German) but also to read, write and speak High German and to speak and read English quite well.
     Mr. and Mrs. Fehr continued farming until 1941 or 1942, when they retires to the town of Wymark. Here Mr. Fehr passed away in November of 1944. He is burred in the Schanzenfeld Cemetery.
     Mrs. Fehr lived alone for some years and spent the last few years living with various members of her family. She died in the Swift Current Hospital on May 4, 1965. Her daughter Helena, born on August 27, 1902 predeceased her on September 6, 1959.
     Johann and Helena had 11 children:
     Heinrich, born on December 3, 1905. He married Tina Loewen.
     Sara, born on August 19, 1909, married Isaac Heinrichs.
     Justina, born on February 9, 1911, died August 11, 1912.
     John O. was born on January 5, 1914. He married Sara Neufeld.
     Elizabeth was born on September 30, 1915. She married Wilhelm Neufeld. (see separate history)
     Justina, born on February 15, 1917, married Carl Stehr.
     Jacob, born on January 17, 1920, married Gertrude Wiens.
     Two sons Peter and Isaac died in infancy
     Peter, born on October 11, 1925, married Elizabeth Friesen.
     Isaac, born on March 28, 1928, married Katharina Braun.

     Johann Fehr was born on 9 June 1839 at Chortitza Colony. He was the son of Benjamin Fehr and Elizabeth Martens. Johann Fehr married Elizabeth Redekop in June 1865 at Alexanderthal, Molotschna. Johann Fehr died on 14 June 1915 at Kronsthal, Manitoba, at age 76.

     Johann Fehr was born on 30 November 1885 at Manitoba. He was the son of David Fehr and Justina D. Neufeld. Johann Fehr married Susanna A. Neudorf, daughter of Abram Neudorf and Susana Giesbrecht, on 2 October 1910. Johann Fehr married Helena Neufeld on 8 May 1941.
