Kehler's mother was Aganetha Groening. Gerhard applied for a patent on NE 1/4 of section 36-7-5E and the application was approved in 1888. The application says that he and wife Helena resided in the village of Hochfeld. The document shows that they resided there since the spring of 1883 in a frame house 19X30, valued at $300.00. It was a one and a half storey house and was well finished. The stable 16X22 was valued at $40.00, as well as valued at $25.00, stock consisted of cattle and horses were kept at Hochfeld. He had 20 acres brocken lan d, about 20 acres marshland and 100-110 acres hayland. The remarks made at the bottom of the application say that Kehler was a well-to-do Mennonite. For a Mennonite, it goes on to say the house was well furnished and finished. The document was dated Dec 28, 1888.
