          JACK AND NORMA NEUFELD
               by Steven Neufeld

My father was born on October 24, 1937 to William and Elizabeth Neufeld. He lived in Wymark until 1975.
He then moved to our farm site 6-14-13, where he had built a house. He worked at and owned Macco Aluminum and Glass for almost 20 years. He sold the business (Macco) in 1981 and has farmed since that time.
Dad married Norma (Dyck) on September 27, 1958 and they have seven children: Michael, born July 27, 1959; Curtis, born November 5, 1960; Robert, born May 13, 1962; Douglas, born October 7, 1964; Kelly, born October 3, 1965; Steven, born September 5, 1969; and Christine, born April 25, 1973.
Jack became a counselor for Division One, R.M. 137 effective January 1983 to serve a two year term.

          JACK AND NORMA NEUFELD

I was born in the Swift Current hospital on October 24, 1937. My parents were William K. and Elizabeth (nee Fehr) Neufeld. I was raised in the Wymark area where I spent my youth on the family farm with my Dad, Mom and siblings. I attended school in Wymark until grade 8, after which I spent most of my time farming with Dad and my brothers. In my spare time I was active in the community where I enjoyed participating in softball, curling and hockey.
On September 27, 1958 I married Norma Dyck (nee Torrans) of Swift Current.
Together Norma and I have raised seven children who are now married and between them have 9 girls and 12 boys, that is a total of 21 grandchildren (and still counting). Our children's names and birth dates are as follows:
     Michael John          July 27, 1959
     Curtis William          November 5, 1960
     Robert Gordon          May 13, 1962
     Douglas Peter          October 7, 1964
     Kelly James          October 5, 1965
     Steven Christopher     September 5, 1969
     Christine Stephanie     April 25, 1972

For the first couple of years of my career I worked for the CPR and Norma and the boys lived with me in "modest" bunkhouses in Hallonquist, Courval, Coderre and Shamrock. In 1961 I began working at Macco Aluminum and Glass where I was soon promoted to general Manager. In 1979 I purchased the company from Art McWilliam. I operated the business until 1982 at which time I sold it to Speedy Auto Glass. Throughout this time Norma and the older boys helped out as they worked at various positions in the company.
After the business years I returned to farming which was my first love. Now I was able o do it fulltime! After my dad retired from farming in 1965 my brother Bob and I rented his land and purchased his machinery. Dad passed away in 1975 and in 1977 I purchased the land from the estate, most of which was homesteaded by my grandfather, John Fehr. In 1973 I purchased a portion of the east half of S.E. 6-14-13 from Jacob Wiebe from Springfeldt for the purpose of building a farmyard. In 1975/76 and forward the boys, Norma, and I built our new house, Quonset, and granaries. We did so with little outside help from contractors and professionals. We worked most evenings and weekends in order to get it all done while the weather permitted, and to keep the costs down.
In 1995 we purchased two more quarters of land (SE and NE of 31-13-13 just south of the current farmyard) from Albert Howlett.
Until 1982 the farm work had to be done in the evenings and on weekends and holidays since I had the full-time job at Macco. That meant plenty of long days and weekends. We had what seemed like an endless number of rocks to pick. Every spring we would pick the fields clean and find that the following year we would dig out even more than before. It always seemed like the rocks were even bigger and heavier than the year before! Since 1998 I have been downsizing the farm due to health problems. I have let some of the land I have rented from others go and I have rented some of my land out.
In 1963 I threw my hat in the political arena, I ran for and was elected to the Rural Municipality (#317) of Swift Current Council and served as Councilor for division one for two years. In 1986 I was elected to the Reeve position where I served for twelve years. My given name was John and at home I was nicknamed as "sonn" (short for sonny) which was common in the Mennonite homes for the eldest boy but when I started school there was a complication as there were four Johns in grade one and Mrs. Valentine Nickel being a creative teacher called me Jackie and the others, John, Johnnie and Jack though later in life I dropped the i.e.
As a kid life was hard as most of it was work and very little play. There were thirteen of us and growing up on a mixed farm you had to contribute. We had eight to ten cows and when our parents were late coming home Helen, Sue, Bill and myself had the responsibility of getting the milking done and the rest of the chores. Therefore I got so that I hated milking and animals to this very day.
When I was 16 years old I got a winter job with C.P.R. in the Swift Current yard shoveling snow. I also worked for a Pioneer elevator repair crew throughout SK with Peter Sawatzky. I think I got this job because Pete had a crush on my sister Betty.
Later I worked on the C.P.R. again for my Uncle Isaac Fehr in Wyatt, SK. This was about the time I met up with Norma and the rest is history.
Some of the saddest times are the inevitable, when family members pass on, first in 1975 my dad, my sister Sue in 1987, with whom I always had a close relationship and then my mother in 1993. At the time of mothers passing Norma broke her leg and ended up going to Saskatoon for medical attention and spent sometime in a wheel chair and crutches.
In spite of the pressure on personal time that comes with trying to build up a farm and maintain a successful business I found time to spend with my kids in sports. I enjoyed coaching then in baseball and hockey. A highlight was the year Curtis, Michael, Robert, Kelly and me had a curling team and competed at various bonspiels and in the Swift Current men's league. My brother Arch would sub sometimes when more than one of the boys couldn't make it.
Most years we found time to go on a summer holiday to name a few places we went to La Crete, AB to visit my brother Bill, uncles and aunts. For a long weekend just before harvest we would go to Montana and go swimming at Saco (Hot Spring) and do a little shopping in Malta where our dollar was actually worth more than the American dollar.
     Michael
I was born in Swift Current in 1959. I grew up in Wymark attending school there and spending most of my spare time helping on the family farm and the family business. After high school I worked primarily at Macco Aluminum & Glass until 1983 at which time I moved to Winnipeg.
I moved to Winnipeg to attend Steinbach Bible College and later the University of Winnipeg. After college I was self-employed in the construction industry until I purchased a manufacturing company in 1969. The company, Yarrow Sash & Door Lid., was established in 1946. it is an industry leader and international supplier of custom wood window windows and doors. (www.yarrow.mnb.ca)
In 1986 I married Miriam Aaldyk, a registered nurse employed at St. Boniface Hospital. We have three children, Katelin, Andrew and Evan born in 1989, 90, & 91 respectively. Katelin who is now 11 wants to be a professor when she grows up, Andrew who is 10 wants to be a Doctor and Evan 8, wants to be a mechanical engineer.
     Curtis
Curtis was born November 5, 1960 to Jack (John) Neufeld and Norma (Dyck) Neufeld at the Swift Current Union Hospital. He lived with his parents in Wymark until 1974 at which time the family moved to Swift Current for one year while a new home was being built 10 miles south of Swift Current.
Curtis attended Wymark School from K to Gr. 8 hen was bussed to Swift Current schools for the remainder of his schooling. He quit school in 1976 and spent a few years sowing his wild oats experimenting with life until 1979 when at which time Curtis met Beverly Anne Hill. Between 1976 and 1979 Curtis worked in the Bracken area on a couple of mixed farms then at Glen Bain and Main Centre in the UGG elevator systems. It wasn't until 1979 that Curtis found a job and occupation that he enjoyed and would continue to work at to this day. He began employment with MacWilliam Construction as a labourer eventually beginning his apprenticeship in the carpentry trade when the company was sold to Bill Jenson (WGJ Construction) around 1982.
Bev was born November 19, 1961 to Charles Nelson Hill and Louise (Oman) Hill at the Swift Current Union Hospital. She spent all her years living and attending school in Swift Current. Bev is the youngest of seven children. Both of Bev's parents and her sister Amelia (Millie) Hill have passed on.
On December 19, 1980 Pastor Reuben Seimens married Curtis and Bev at the Wymark EMC Church. They lived in Swift Current for a year while they built a house in Wymark and in 1981 moved into their new home. They lived in Wymark until 1985 having their first two children, Jennifer Anne born February 22, 1984 and Danielle Louise born May 13, 1985. In 1985 they moved to Winnipeg where Curtis worked building houses with his brothers Michael and Douglas. Bev did not enjoy Winnipeg and eventually in 1986 they moved to Moose Jaw, SK. It was here that Curtis completed his apprenticeship and obtained his interprovincial journeyman ticket in the carpentry trade.
He worked at a few different jobs until 1968 when he started his employment as a carpenter at CFB Moose Jaw. During the time he spent working at the base he got involved in the local Employee Assistance Program and volunteered his time as a referral agent with the base EAP. The Department of National Defence supplied all the training for this job. Curtis obtained numerous other certificates of training while with the Government. As a carpenter Curtis worked his way into term supervisory positions as a 21C shop foreman and preventative maintenance inspector.
While in Moose Jaw Bev and Curtis had a son Dustin Curtis born June 22, 1987. They became involved as a family in a local church (Regal Heights MB) remaining a part of the church for a number of years. The highlight of their Moose Jaw outings was a Tim Horton's coffee and pastry stop. This was a daily routine for the family.
In 1997 they moved back to Swift Current where Curtis started a small contracting company (Better Built Contracting and Carpentry) doing resident and small commercial construction. Two significant projects Curtis has done since working in Swift Current are the Highland outdoor rink and the Kin park spray pool.
To date as of January 1, 2000 Curtis still owns and operates his own business in Swift Current. Bev is a partner in a painting business (B-Line Painting). Jennifer is attending Gr. 10 at the Comprehensive High School. Danielle is attending Gr. 9 at Wymark School and Dustin is attending Gr. 7 at Wymark School.
