Peter P. Toews

     Peter P. Toews was born on 21 March 1839 at Kleefeld, Molotschna. He married Elisabeth R. Reimer, daughter of Abraham F. Reimer and Elisabeth Rempel, on 9 June 1860 at Kleefeld, Molotschna. Peter P. Toews died on 9 May 1882 at Steinbach, Manitoba, at age 43.
     He immigrated on 27 August 1874 to Quebec City, Quebec, arriving aboard the S. S. Hibernian.

Peter Toews delivered freight in Russia. He emigrated from Russia to Steinbach, Manitoba on the S.S. Hibernian NO.63 leaving on August 27, 1874. He was Baptized on Pentecost 1858, in the "Grossegemeinde". He and his wife Elizabeth remained in this church for 12 years. Having come considerably under the influence of the "Kleinegemeinde" through Elizabeths people, shortly before the y left for North America they became members of the "Kleinegeminde", then a group of about 125 members. Since Peter was the only member of the "Kleinegemeinde" in the Toews family, he was the first to leave Russia and the only one to go to Manito ba. Peter's lot in Steinbach was #9, right where the Towne Square Mall now stands. (Lincoln Kroeker - 1998).
